Stewart’s career was almost entirely spent as an academic nephrologist at Guy’s Hospital, but he had many international roles, including as president of the UK Renal Association, adult and paediatric European associations, and the International Society of Nephrology.
He became a nephrologist in the early days of dialysis expansion to cater for those with permanent renal failure. His particular interests in glomerular disease, SLE, and paediatric nephrology before and during the time when paediatric nephrology was just beginning to develop. But he is very widely known for his enthusiasm and profound range of knowledge, which extended to multiple languages and other areas of interest, including the history of his specialty.
