The growth in the availability of renal replacement therapy in the UK  was gradual and often hard fought.  Some of those struggles are  described in The 1980s: Meeting Demand.

Sometimes national campaigning & advocacy were effective.

Sometimes the challenges were in the public domain and debated in the media in ways which were not helpful to the cause (see the Derek Sage Affair).
