The first renal organisation in the UK was the Renal Association, founded in 1950 as a small group of those interested in renal science. As clinical nephrology emerged in the 1960s and 1970s with the advent of dialysis and transplantation, the Renal Association became its focal point, at first mainly emphasising research and education, but in due course a wider role including professional advocacy and service development. It continued until 2021 to count among its members the great majority of consultant nephrologists in the UK and a significant proportion of nephrology trainees, as well as non-clinical scientists. In 2021 it merged into a new single organisation for kidney professionals, the UK Kidney Association.
